SA:SA govt 'guilty of jobs for the boys'
By Tim Dornin
ADELAIDE, Aug 18 AAP - The South Australian government has engaged in a "jobs for the
boys" approach when making appointments to boards and other key positions, Opposition
Leader Isobel Redmond says.
The Liberal leader has called for independent panels to pick candidates for such jobs,
to bring more transparency to the process.
She cited Thursday's appointment of former education minister Jane Lomax-Smith to chair
the board of the South Australian Museum as one that could be questioned.
Ms Lomax-Smith, who was a Labor government minister for eight years, lost her seat
in the 2010 state election.
"We really need to have a much cleaner approach to getting the best person for the
job - not just failed Labor candidates and failed Labor members," Ms Redmond told reporters
on Thursday.
Ms Redmond said positions should be advertised with an independent panel established
to determine which applicant had the best qualifications.
"A merit-based appointment system should be in place for these things," she said.
But Premier Mike Rann said Ms Lomax-Smith had worked in the science, education, government
and business sectors and her experience would be invaluable to the museum.
Mr Rann also welcomed the appointments of BHP Billiton executive Dean Dall Valle to
the board along with Michael Worton, the vice-provost at University College London.
Professor Worton will travel to Adelaide at his own expense to attend board meetings.
"We are privileged to have someone of his experience, contacts and world view to add
to the board's stature." Mr Rann said.

FED:$2 billion expected for mental health
By Susanna Dunkerley
CANBERRA, April 21 AAP - The federal government is expected to match the coalition's
boosted commitment to mental health by setting aside $2 billion in the May budget.
Both major parties are vying for the upper hand on the issue of mental health which
is expected to be the centrepiece of the upcoming federal budget.
Health Minister Nicola Roxon confirmed on Thursday that funding for the area would
be set aside in the budget, but wouldn't comment on the reported $2 billion figure.
Ms Roxon confirmed the spending on the same day federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott
extended the coalition's mental health policy, taking it to almost $2 billion.
In a speech at the University of Sydney's Brain and Mind Institute, Mr Abbott outlined
an extra $430 million worth of mental health initiatives, with a focus on job services.
The extra funding comes on top of $1.5 billion Mr Abbott promised during the 2010 election
campaign for 800 extra mental health beds and 80 intervention centres.
Labor's former mental health adviser Professor Mendoza welcomed Mr Abbott's package,
for recognising "a yawning gap in the government's actions" on mental health.
Prof Mendoza, who resigned from his advisory role in 2010 because of his concerns with
Labor's focus, expects the coalition's spend to be matched in the budget.
"There is talk ... a significant number being proposed (for mental health in the budget),"
he told ABC Radio on Thursday, flagging a figure of $2 billion.
But Prof Mendoza says money is unlikely to roll-out until 2014-15, creating "a credibility
problem" for government which had promised to prioritise mental health.
"Over four years that ($2 billion figure) could be substantial, but let's not gild
the lilly here and put all the money in the third, fourth and fifth year."
Ms Roxon refused to speculate on a figure but criticised the coalition's package.
"The cheers for the Liberal Party might soon turn to tears," she told ABC Radio, saying
the coalition would not be able to fund its promises.
Mr Abbott could not say where the money would come from but promised to outline savings
well before the next federal election.
He also downplayed suggestions the commitment was an attempt to get a jump on Labor.
"This is a long-term commitment of mine," he told ABC Radio.
"I want a fair go for people with mental health, and that's what they haven't had over
the past few years."
Mental health expert Patrick McGorry, who is meeting Treasurer Wayne Swan on Thursday
to discuss mental health, welcomed the political focus from both sides.
"We are seeing political leadership from across the spectrum," the former Australian
of the Year told ABC Radio.

FED: Money not the answer to improving indigenous health: report
Eds: Embargoed until 0001 (AEDT) Thursday, December 3
By Julian Drape
CANBERRA, Dec 3 AAP - The commonwealth has increased its funding for indigenous health
programs by 250 per cent over the past decade, but Aborigines have not benefited as a
result, a new report suggests.
Spending jumped from $115 million in 1995-96 to $492 million in 2007-08, "with no appreciable
improvements in health outcomes", according to the conservative think tank the Centre
for Independent Studies (CIS).
The commonwealth spent $600 million on indigenous health last financial year, a further
50 per cent increase on the 2007-08 level.
But the report's author, Sara Hudson, says the money is being wasted.
"The Rudd government is doing what previous administrations have always done - throwing
more and more money at the problem," the report says.
"But this is not the solution. Improvements in indigenous health outcomes will only
occur once the lack of accountability that has plagued the Aboriginal health sector ends."
The CIS report, Closing the Accountability Gap, says there are numerous programs for
every foreseeable indigenous health issue.
But most are provided because someone believes they are a good idea or because funding
can be secured, not because they are necessarily needed.
"The untargeted nature of government spending on health means it is difficult to know
what services the money is buying and for whom," the report says.
More damning is the suggestion that there is a lack of financial accountability across
the sector.
"Fewer than half of the Aboriginal health services file annual reports or complete
their financial reporting requirements," the report says.
"They face few consequences for not filing reports, but the repercussions of this apathy
have resulted in financial mismanagement, insolvency and even fraud."
The report suggests the way forward could be to adopt a proposal of federal Labor's
National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission.
The commission recommended a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
authority be established to pool disparate funding streams.
"There needs to be better management of overall funding and a strategy to co-ordinate
how programs are delivered," the CIS report concludes.

Vic: Police Christmas road blitz biggest ever
MELBOURNE, Dec 20 AAP - Victoria Police has launched its biggest ever road blitz, targeting
drunken drivers and dangerously stupid young ones.
Assistant Commissioner of Traffic Ken Lay on Saturday said thousands of officers would
be out in force over the Christmas-New Year period in an unprecedented show of strength.
"Victoria's got a proud history of road safety, we've reduced the number of deaths
over the years quite remarkably," he said.
"But for some reason the Victorian community can't get it right over the Christmas period.
"We are continually amongst the highest number of fatalities across Australia."
Assistant Commissioner Lay said that on Saturday night all 16 of Victoria's booze buses
would be on the road, testing motorists.
He said police had been especially frustrated by a small group of irresponsible young
drivers who ignore warnings and drive dangerously, putting all road users at risk.
The assistant commissioner said he had a message for them.
"There's a group of people that simply don't get it and I think the only way to change
their behaviour is to actually catch them and get them off the road," he said.
On Friday night, Victorian police picked up a P-plate driver on a restricted passenger
licence who had four people in his car and returned an alcohol reading of .154.
In another case, a 17-year-old learner driver had an alcohol reading of .142 when tested
after crashing his car into a brick wall in Mount Waverley, police said.
Also, an 18-year-old learner driver who almost ran police off the road at Epping had
seven passengers in his car, including two in the boot.

Mr Howard also called on the Victorian government to back the commonwealth's $10 billion

Victoria has refused to sign on to the plan, instead proposing its own scheme.
Mr Howard today urged a national approach to the issue.
"This is Australian water, it's an Australia problem and it's got to be solved at a
national level and that can only happen if our plan is adopted," he said.
"So, far from dumping the plan, I am energetically recommitted to it and without Victoria
it won't work and if Victoria doesn't join Victoria is holding up a national solution

But at a meeting of the natural resources ministerial council in Brisbane today, federal
Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the scheme could work without Victoria, but
not as effectively.
"The plan can proceed without Victoria - it will be more cumbersome, it will not work
as well and of course it will mean none of the $10 billion (in funding) or any part of

Fed: Hicks still in limbo despite fleeting hopes of freedom
By Steve Larkin
ADELAIDE, AAP - David Hicks twice thought he'd be free.
But the year 2006 ended for Hicks much as his past five years have done - in solitary
confinement in Guantanamo Bay; yet to face trial on terror charges.
Lawyers for the Adelaide-born man accused of training with al-Qaeda tried almost every
trick in the book to get Hicks freed this year.
They won various legal skirmishes, and the US military commissions set to try him were
declared illegal, but Hicks remains in detention at the US military facility at Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba.
He has been there since January 2002 - a month after being captured among Taliban forces
in Afghanistan and sold by Northern Alliance militia to US forces for $15,000.
Hicks' initial hopes of freedom came after he won British citizenship, raising hopes
the Brits would treat him as one of their own and press for his release from Guantanamo
Bay.
They didn't.
Instead, Britain's Home Office appealed the citizenship verdict, which had been based
on Hicks' mother being British.
The Home Office lost.
But in its appeal, the office said Hicks told MI5 agents who interrogated him in 2003
that he received extensive training at camps in Kashmir and Afghanistan and met the late
Abu Hafs, an al-Qaeda kingpin who prior to his death in 2001 was named by Osama bin Laden
as his successor.
The British sent a letter to Hicks' lawyers setting out why the Home Office was unwilling
to grant Hicks citizenship, citing the interview Hicks had with MI5 in April 2003 in Guantanamo
Bay.
"Mr Hicks admitted ... attending a (Lashkar-e-Toiba) training camp in Kashmir in around
2000 ... attending the Al Farooq system of camps in Afghanistan in around 2001 ... (and)
receiving training in weapons and guerrilla warfare," the letter said.
The letter said Hicks also had admitted "training with a number of UK nationals known
to be Islamic extremists" including Richard Reid, the "shoe bomber" now serving a life
sentence for trying to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with a bomb concealed in his shoe
in 2001.
After losing its appeal, the Blair government refused to act on Hicks' behalf and lobby
for his release, as they had successfully done for other British citizens detained at
Guantanamo Bay.
Hicks' hopes of freedom must also have been raised in June, when the US Supreme Court
ruled the military commissions were unlawful and breached Geneva conventions.
The Australian terror suspect had pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder,
aiding the enemy and conspiracy before the commission in August 2004.
But those charges were struck out by the Supreme Court, which prompted fresh calls
for Hicks release from his lawyers and supporters.
Instead, the US government rewrote the commission rules and Hicks was back to square
one - detained without charge.
Lawyers for Hicks, 31, have now taken action in the Federal Court of Australia seeking
to have him freed from Guantanamo Bay.
Hicks' legal team appeared in the Federal Court in December in an attempt to get an
order for the Australian government to demand US authorities free the former jackaroo
as soon as possible.
But the court ordered they return on February 26 next year, when government lawyers
will explain why they believe the court doesn't have power to hear the case.

NSW: Thousands of anti-war protesters take to Sydney streets
By Tara Ravens
SYDNEY, Aug 12 AAP - Tired of the death and carnage in their homeland, about 1,000
mostly Lebanese protesters took to Sydney's streets today in a show of anti-Israeli sentiment.
Waving placards and shouting "Israel, the USA, how many kids have you killed today",
the march moved through the city from Town Hall to Hyde Park.
Leading the march, a band of young male Lebanese youths carried a massive sign - "Stop
Israeli Terror" - outlined by graphic pictures of dead or injured children.
Hassam Bazzi from the prime minister's Muslim Advisory Council said he had recently
returned from the war torn country.
"There is not a single bridge left, not a single school that hasn't been destroyed,
there's no mosques, no churches, no children that haven't been injured yet," he told the
crowd.
"I can't described what I've seen there."
With strong support from the highly emotional gathering, Mr Bazzi cried "death to the
enemies, long life for the Lebanese resistance".
"It is time for the good decent people in the world to tell Israel enough is enough," he said.
A few hours before the protest began, the UN Security Council adopted unanimously a
resolution calling for an end to fighting between Israel and Lebanon's Hizbollah and authorising
up to 15,000 new peacekeepers to enforce it.
But Islamic Friendship Association of Australia spokesman Keysar Trad told the rally
it did not go far enough.
"It seems we have some prospect of peace but it's still early days," he said.
"We still do not have an effective ceasefire. We still have Lebanese and Palestinian
civilians being killed."
Greens senator Kerry Nettle welcomed the resolution but condemned the Israeli government's
decision to keep attacking Lebanon for at least another 48 hours.
"Israel's decision to continue with their offensive whilst their cabinet considers
the UN resolution on Sunday demonstrates a callous disregard for human life," she said.
Labor minister Anthony Albanese agreed.
"There should be an immediate ceasefire right now and the UN resolution must be respected,"
he said in a letter read to the crowd.
Mr Trad said more than 1.5 million Lebanese had been displaced by the fighting, which
has caused more than $6 billion in damage.
He said Israel should not only stop its bombing of Lebanon but foot the damages bill.
"It must pay for the rebuilding, for every bridge, every school it has destroyed," Mr Trad said.
More than 300 police, including riot officers and PolAir, tracked the protest as it
marched through the city.

Fed: Decision doesn't give comfort to other Papuans - Vanstone
CANBERRA, April 6 AAP - The granting of visas to a group of Papuan asylum seekers does
not mean others will be protected by Australia, Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone says.
Relations between Jakarta and Canberra have been strained since late last month when
the Immigration Department granted temporary protection visas to 42 asylum-seekers from
Indonesia's separatist province of Papua.
Reports yesterday of another boatload of asylum-seekers making their way to Australia
threatened the relationship even further, but a search by the Customs Service failed to
find them.
Nationalist anger in Indonesia is running high, with critics likening the visa decision
to Australia's intervention in East Timor in 1999.
But Senator Vanstone said the decision did not mean protection visas would be granted
to any asylum seeker from Papua.
"The decision wasn't made by me - it was made by the department. We indicated the normal
process would be followed," she told ABC radio.
"Each of these decisions are made individually, they're made on the basis of the individual
claim by the individual person and in their individual circumstances - that is, what was
happening to them and their fear in a particular area.
"It is certainly not a decision, each of these, on a territory-wide basis, a region-wide
basis, certainly not a countrywide basis and certainly not a decision about the Indonesian
government or anyone else."
The minister acknowledged the damage to the bilateral relationship which has already
seen Jakarta recall its ambassador from Canberra.
But she said it had to be recognised that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono faced
a huge task as the head of an emerging democracy.
"We have difficulties in Australia in government obviously because of differences of
opinion in a federal system - just imagine what it's like to be at the helm of new fledgling
democracy with thousands of islands," Senator Vanstone said.
"I think he's doing a tremendous job in cleaning Indonesia up, building a democracy
there, and Australians who want to see stability and retain friendship for our nearest
neighbour I think would do well to reflect on whether there's any good in anybody promoting
any unrest and promoting criticism of Indonesia.
"Because they've got a tremendous job to do to build a democracy and Yudhoyono's determined
to do it."

Tehran-born woman named one of North America's most creative businesspeople.(Diaspora: Around the globe)
The Iranian-Canadian founder of BroadbandTV Corp. was named to Fast Company's top 100 list of the "Most Creative People in Business 2011."
Tehran-born Shahrzad Rafati, the founder and CEO of the British Columbia-based Internet business was listed number 37 in this year's list.
BroadbandTV finds and identifies copyrighted content on sites where users upload video content--even if it has a copyright--and then sells ads against these user-posted videos--essentially rebranding it as official content. The revenue is then shared with the copyright owner. "We've claimed and monetized hundreds of thousands of videos for the NBA [National Basketball Association] over the last two years," Rafati said.
The company is based off computer programs created by Rafati; these search algorithms crawl the web for specific, copyrighted content. It was for this innovation that Rafati was named one of the top 100 creative business thinkers of 2011.
Rafati's search algorithms scan the web for copyrighted video clips that have been uploaded without authorization. When they find one, BroadbandTV staff screen and remove any objectionable content and then attach advertisements. The video clip is then rebranded into a revenue-generating ad for the copyright holder. The resulting ad revenue is shared among partners in the venture, including the NBA and BroadbandTV.
The Iranian-born entrepreneur, who moved from to Vancouver in 2000 to study computer science, said she founded BroadbandTV in 2005 to "take the fear out of the web" for content owners like Warner Bros., Sony and the NBA. A year after founding the company, she graduated from the University of British Columbia in computer science.
BroadbandTV already has business relationships with companies like YouTube, the NBA, Electronic Arts, United Way, Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures and Warner Brothers.
"I consume a lot of videos online myself. I watch a lot of content on YouTube and other sites," Rafati told the Vancouver Sun.
"When first YouTube came around, and a lot of other video portals that might not even be around now, the majority of the content on these platforms was uploaded by users. The majority of the uploaded content was not videos of cats and dogs. It was an NBA clip, an American Idol clip.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
"I thought--the guys that are uploading are not really thinking of themselves as pirates. These are fans that are going out there, they are uploading the videos, they are sharing them with their friends and they're very enthusiastic. They're posting it on their Facebook wall.
"We thought, how can we come up with a solution to a problem that the content partners are facing where we give them control?" Rafati told the Vancouver Sun.
A deal to clean up user generated content was the first step. The next one was persuading the clients to let BroadbandTV create unique, legitimized Internet video channels where fans could upload their clips--and attach revenue-generating ads.
The company also created VISO, a "consumer brand" on YouTube. VISO offers a series of channels dedicated to content from video games, sports, music, television and film trailers. There's a VISO Gamer channel for video gamers to post video clips from their in-game adventures. VISO Trailers shows movie trailers and other film content. VISO Games shows video game trailers, and VISO Music features concert clips and other music videos.
"At the end of the day, you are giving the end user what they are looking for, not looking at them as pirates but as fans, enthusiastic fans that are going out there sharing, uploading content, sharing it with their friends and educating them," Rafati said.
Rafati said her favorite new channel is VISO Give, which enables charitable enterprises to post their own content and generate revenue from it.
"You see a lot of technology companies that just create technology for the sake of creating something really cool and hoping that someone is going to acquire the company. For us, it's solving a real problem that exists out there," Rafati said.
"It's something I'm personally passionate about because it's doing something good within the community and truly helping the non-profits. We are hoping to get more and more non-profits on board to really create a kick-ass, aggregated hub destination for the non-profits."
Rafati is currently meeting with potential investors about a Series A round of venture capital funding.
"We've been fortunate," she said. "The business is cash-flow positive. We have a proven model. As a result of that, we want to grow rapidly and we think it's best to go out there and raise some money and truly scale the business."

Easy 3D: stereo photography for everyone.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Now is probably the biggest surge in the popularity of 3D (stereo) in history. A rapidly increasing number of theatrical movies are filmed in 3D or converted to 3D in post-production (note: poorly converted films may cause headaches in some people, especially if they are not used to watching moving 3D images). 3D TVs are becoming more affordable with better quality for home entertainment, and can readily play the image files produced by consumer digital 3D cameras and camcorders. There are true 3D cameras and camcorders, and attachment accessories for SLRs. With so many equipment choices, everyone can easily jump on the 3D bandwagon!
3D (or stereo) vision is a natural way for us to see things in the real world and gives us depth perception. Most people with two functioning eyes see in stereo. When we photograph in 2D, we often include depth cues, which are elements that when compared to each other give us a sense of scale and depth. We usually do not overlap these objects, but rather offset them somewhat so we can see everything. In 3D photography, the more things overlap the greater the 3D effect. When viewed, these objects have their own place in space and give us natural depth that we are used to seeing in real life. You cannot see depth at long distances so foreground objects are usually included in scenics and landscapes to give a sense of depth to the image.
Both film and digital cameras are illustrated in this article, and the techniques for 3D photography apply to both. 3D photography can be extremely creative. Techniques such as having things come out of the image toward you can be fun and effective (how many of you duck in 3D movies when something is coming directly toward you and appears to jump off the screen?). In all cases discussed here, two separate images of the same scene are taken, from slightly different positions, which represent what your eyes see (a left eye image and a right eye image). Special viewers or glasses merge these two images together to create the 3D effect. Some people can free view (no special equipment) stereo images as well--parallel view, where the left image is on the left and the right image is on the right; and cross view, where the images are reversed.
The following paragraphs cover basic equipment and techniques needed to get started. Much more detailed information can be found on the Internet. See the list of resources in the sidebar for more information and for places to order 3D cameras and supplies.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Using Your Existing Equipment
Using your existing camera(s) is the easiest and most affordable way to get into 3D photography. If you use an SLR or medium format camera, you can take advantage of all of the high quality lenses and accessories you already own; but any camera can be used--even a compact digital or disposable camera.
There are several techniques used to capture 3D images with a single camera. One is to cha cha between shots, where you lean to one side putting your weight over that foot, take the image, then shift your weight to the other foot and take the second image. Take care to keep the horizon straight and compose the image the same way (do not raise or lower the camera angle). Another technique is to use a slide bar to attach the camera to a tripod and then move it from side to side on the bar (some slide along the bar and some have a hinge to jump the camera side to side).
Macro photography can be especially fun in 3D. Amazing detail pops out allowing you to see minute objects in a way you have never seen before. As with standard macro photography, a tripod is a must. A slide bar or macro focusing rail also is essential for critical control of camera movement. As with scenic photography, the camera is moved side to side between shots.
The basic rule of thumb is to move the camera side-to-side 1/30th of the distance of the lens to nearest object distance (e.g., if you are 30 feet away, move the camera 1 foot; if you are 30 inches away, move it 1 inch). You also can move the camera approximately the same distance as between the center of your eyes (about 3 to 4 inches). There are free calculation software programs available online to help calculate the correct distance to move the camera. Be sure to keep parallel with the subject, and focus on the same spot in both images or the depth of field will be different (use manual focusing when possible). The drawback to using only one camera is you should not have moving subjects as they will be in different positions in each image and cause headaches and eye strain from the brain trying to merge the images together.

SLR Attachments (Beam Splitters)
Beam splitters are relatively inexpensive attachments for SLRs to do 3D photography. They use a system of mirrors and/or prisms that "split" the image into a left and right version. Pentax [R] made a beam splitter accessory, which came with a special viewer. Currently, Loreo [R] makes a product called Lens-in-a-Cap, which works on the same principle and is much more accurate. There are three versions: wide/landscape, normal/ portrait, and macro. These go on the camera body in place of a regular lens and take two vertical half frame images at the same time, so having moving subjects is okay as the two images are exposed at the same time freezing the movement in both images. This is an easy way to switch between 2D and 3D photography using only one camera, and they don't take up much space in your camera bag.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
True 3D Digital Cameras and Camcorders
The newest gadgets are true 3D cameras and camcorders. These products also can be set in 2D mode, therefore eliminating the need for two separate cameras or camcorders.
The most popular and best quality compact digital 3D camera is the Fujifilm [R] FinePix REAL 3D W3 (see the hardware review in this issue on page 10). This camera is small, light, and has point-&-shoot ease with advanced manual controls available on dials and in menus. An extensive amount of shooting options is available. It is comparably priced to a medium to high-end 2D compact digital cameras. The W3 takes high definition (HD) 2D and 3D movies (with audio) as well as still images, and is compatible with 3D TVs. 3D images are easily processed for a variety of output formats with free software (StereoPhoto Maker [R]) available online (pay-for software is available as well). Images and movies are viewable in 3D on the camera's LCD screen, making it a lot of fun to instantly share the 3D experience (the wow! or awesome! factor).
Cyclopital3D [R] carries three accessory attachments to expand the capabilities of the W3: Macro Adaptor (add a close-up lens for close focusing), Auxiliary Lens Adaptor (add wide angle lenses and lens hoods), and Stereo Base Extender.
Other cameras and camcorders available include: Easy 3D Stereo Digital Camera [R]; Sony [R] DSC-TX9 and DSC-WX5 3D cameras; Panasonic [R] HDC-SDT750K HD 3D Camcorder; Panasonic AG-3DA1 Professional Integrated Twin-lens 3D Camera Recorder; Sony Handycam HDR-TD10 Full HD 3D Camcorder; Sony Bloggie 3D DualLens 3D Camcorder For Your Pocket; Aiptek [R] 3D-HD High Definition 3D Camcorder, and JVC [R] GS-TD1 3D camcorder.
Twin Rig Cameras
You also can use two cameras (compact or SLR; film or digital) mounted together on a bar. A straight bar puts them side by side with a large lens separation. A "Z" bar turns one camera upside down so the lenses are closer together to allow photographing nearer to your subject (good for close-ups). Some models can be wired together so they fire at the same time (one being the master and the other the slave), which allows accurate motion capture. Some Canon [R] compact digital cameras can be easily linked together and run with free StereoData Maker [R] software that allows extra features for 3D photography to be accessed.
1950s Vintage Stereo Cameras
There were many 3D cameras made worldwide around the 1950s--the previous big heyday for 3D. Common makes here in the United States include Realist [R], Kodak [R], and Revere [R]. You can still find these cameras on eBay (search for stereo camera); at camera stores (ones that carry used equipment); and at yard sales, auctions, and flea markets. There are a few people who work on these cameras who can clean them up. They are still excellent cameras if you want to shoot film or slides. Because they are true stereo cameras, they capture motion well.
Other True 3D Film Cameras
Currently available new (including old stock) and vintage true 3D cameras include Loreo Stereo Camera Model #321 (35mm film), Holga [R] Stereo Pin-Hole Camera (120 Film), Holga Stereo Camera (120 Film), Kalimar [R] 3D Stereo Camera, Nishika [R] N8000 Lenticular Camera, The 3D MAC [R] (macro point & shoot); Custom Nimslo [R] 3D Lenticular Camera, RBT [R], and 3DWorld [R] TL120-1 Medium Format Stereo Camera.

Report: 25m home theater PCs installed worldwide by 2013.(LIES, DAMN LIES AND STATISTICS)
Despite the best efforts of Microsoft, Intel and their PC-making progeny, the acceptance of PCs as a living room device for entertainment has been nearly zero.
That is about to change.
According to a report from ABI Research, PCs will play an ever-increasing role in the management, distribution and playback of digital media in the home, with both network-connected PC media servers and in-living room PCs growing in adoption over time. PCs that come in traditional AV form factor and more traditional home theater PCs will grow to an installed base worldwide of 25 million by 2013.
The use of the Internet to deliver video entertainment and information to the home is expected to increase as a) broadband speeds increase, b) better compression technology becomes available, c) homes are equipped with networks capable of reliably handling high definition video and d) video producers, seeing the Internet-caused decline in music revenues, become more aggressive in offering their best stuff on the Net.
"There are two primary ways the PC can be incorporated into the digital living room," said principal analyst Steve Wilson. "One has a PC directly connected to a client device, a home theater PC, or in the form of a PC integrated with a display. The other involves using an embedded client to extend the PC output to a TV."
Microsoft's bundling of the Media Center application with Vista will help solidify the role of the PC in future living rooms, and clients running over home networks and extender technologies will be by far the leading way to connect a PC to the TV.
ABI Research believes these efforts will take time, and there will be some bumps in the road, as shown by the disappointing fate of Intel's Viiv program. Further, while new broadband-based services may bypass the home PC initially, the PC model will become more inclusive in the future.
There will still be a small market of home theater PC enthusiasts who buy custom-designed home theater PC systems that look like the audio-visual gear the consumers already have in a stack. While all-in-one systems are a bit bulky today, in the future more optimized designs for converging the PC and TV will appear.
"While the custom install market has some appetite for the best high end home theater PCs, it's a very limited demand," says Wilson. "Tech-savvy consumers who understand the advantages of a home theater PC are still price-sensitive and unwilling to pay ultra-high prices."
The ABI Research report "Home Theater and Media Center PCs in the Living Room" examines the forces driving the home theater PC market and how regional factors are influencing adoption throughout the world. Forecasts are provided on a regional basis for key markets and products.

Media matters: consulting firm offers affordable marketing alternatives to small businesses.(MAKING IT)(TSG Consulting Inc.)
Some people think it takes a boatload of cash to start a successful business, but Mary A. Spio knows better. "When it comes to building an enduring business, resourcefulness is more valuable than cash," says this CEO and founder of New York-based TSG Consulting Inc. "You can be successful by having 'just enough' money and the commitment to pound the pavement."
The strategy has worked well for 32-year-old Spio, whose 14-employee firm provides marketing and technology solutions to a variety of clients. Founded in 2001, the company's recent projects range from building and marketing Websites, handling market research, designing consumer surveys, and even creating a reality TV show.
"We've designed first-rate Websites for as low as $500, placed products on major TV shows for as little as $2,500, and orchestrated a nationwide tour that cost $120,000 for the creators of ABC Television's The Bachelor," says Spio. "I especially enjoy utilizing creative technology and strategic promotional partnerships to extend brands--regardless of budget."
But then again, Spio has never let budget constraints stand in her way. She started her company with a small amount of funding from her own bank account and a $75,000 U.S. Small Business Administration loan. When the well ran dry, she used personal possessions, selling everything from "my own inventions to my house and cars," recalls Spio, who made $430,000 in 2004 and expects $3 million in sales this year.
TSG Consulting's success is rooted in its founder's experience as an engineer. A graduate of Syracuse University's electrical engineering program, Spio, who spent four and a half years in the military, is a pioneer of digital cinema technology, and holds a patent for the innovation. Eager to sink her teeth into the business world, Spio came up with the idea for TSG Consulting while working for PanAmSat, a provider of commercial satellite and data services to the television industry.
"I saw a lot of viable, cost-effective alternatives that smaller companies could use to market via the Internet, cable, and satellite TV, but also realized that very few companies catered to small businesses that wanted access to this option," says Spio. "I started a company that would assist those companies with their technology and marketing needs."
Along the way, Spio says adversity has reared its ugly head on occasion, but has never been strong enough to slow her progress. "Being black and a woman, people initially assume that your ice is not as cold as the next person's, or that you can't offer services to the world at large," Spio explains. "I just keep things in perspective--it's not personal. Once you help people see how you can be of service, they get over it."
Spio credits her penchant for alliances with helping TSG Consulting break down the doors to land clients like AOL and BMG Music. By acquiring over $1.5 million in promotional partnerships with various TV, radio, print, and online firms, she says her firm turned a corner that some startups never reach. "One of the things that many startups overlook is ways to partner with media companies to bring their product to market," says Spio.
Mark Brooks, an editor/blogger for OnlinePersonalsWatch.com in New York, calls Spio "well ahead of the game" in her industry. He credits her engineering and technology background with helping to drive her success as a business owner, and points out that her creative side is equally as compelling. "Mary's combination of a disciplined engineering background and creative streak," Brooks says, "definitely gives her an edge."

Study shows legumes reduce heart disease risk.

For bean eaters, the new findings by researchers at the Tulane University School of Public Health may be, well, music to their ears.
A 19-year study of 9,632 men and women found that those who consumed legumes four or more times per week had a 22 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease than people who ate legumes less than once a week.
Legume consumption has been shown to lower total cholesterol and especially low-density lipoprotein, the so-called bad cholesterol, Lydia A. Bazzano reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Legumes included in the study were dry beans and peas such as pinto beans, red beans, black-eye peas, peanuts and peanut butter.

Muscles that are easily fatigued can be given new strength when exposed to a protein discovered by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Reporting in the journal Science, the scientists describe how the substance they call a calcium-signaling protein rejuvenated fatigued muscles in laboratory mice. The protein converted type 2 muscles that are easily worn out into type 1 muscles that have considerable stamina.
The discovery could lead to new therapies for patients with chronic disease whose muscles are weakened.
"The muscles of individuals who are on bed rest resemble type 2 muscle fibers," said Dr. Rhonda Bassel-Duby, a co-author of the study. "They fatigue quickly and the muscles are tired. If we have a way of mimicking this protein, we can convert the muscle with a drug to a more fatigue-resistant muscle."

The Mayo Clinic has launched a new Web site intended to help men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer decide what path of therapy to follow.
The site at MayoClinic.com looks at five available treatments and lists the benefits and drawbacks of each. Besides factual information, the site includes personal stories from five men who have had experience with treatment of prostate cancer.
"It's not unusual to feel alone when facing a prostate-cancer diagnosis," said Dr. Donald Novicki, a Mayo urologist. "This resource is a way to hear in detail from others in similar circumstances. It is a tool to use in conjunction with the advice of your physician."
