JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- The following information was released by the Missouri Office of Administration:
As part of Gov. Jay Nixon's efforts to expand broadband and high-speed Internet access throughout Missouri, the state is hosting a kick-off meeting in Dexter, Mo., to discuss the region's technology needs.
The first meeting of the Bootheel Regional Technology Planning Team (RTPT) will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Tuesday, March 15 at the Bootheel Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission office located at 105 E. North Main St. The purpose of the meeting is to assess the current status of broadband in this area, the obstacles faced, and the efforts in place to improve availability.
"Broadband is important for quality of life to all Missourians and allows them to compete globally," said MoBroadbandNow Director Damon Porter. "We are gathering community input to create an understanding of where broadband exists today and identify areas where expansion is needed."
The RTPT will meet over the next six months to gather community feedback that will aid in the development of the strategic plan. The team consists of members from various public and private sectors such as agriculture, economic development, healthcare, public safety, and broadband providers. Broadband can benefit each of these entities by allowing them to communicate faster and transfer data more easily.
Currently, fewer than 80 percent of Missourians have broadband access. The state's goal is to increase accessibility to 95 percent of the total population over the next few years.
