Fed: Call for cut in ties with laos over detained Australians

A spokeswoman for Mr DOWNER says the government undersstand's the family's concerns
and will continue to lobby for fair treatment and clarification of the charges.

The spokeswoman has denied Mr STEWART'S claim the government had not known about the
arrest until he went to the media last week.

She says Australian officials had been actively involved from the start and have been
pursuing all possible avenues.
