THE SPIRIT STEPS TO PARADES' DRUMBEAT.(MAIN)

A slice of Americana was on display Monday in downtown Albany as well as on the residential streets of Bethlehem, Watervliet and numerous other small communities: the annual Memorial Day parade.

The ritual chiefly honors military veterans, as 7-year-old Corey Wooster could tell you. But it also sounds the beginning of summer, despite the cool temperatures Monday. Some parts are homey, some parts are hokey, but as any kid could tell you, what's a parade without plenty of bands, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, cookies and lemonade, and, of course, firetrucks?

``Trumpets and firetrucks'' were the main attractions for 4-year-old Kevin Shreffler, decked out in a red shirt covered with white stars. His twin brother, Tyler, dressed in a similar blue shirt, agreed.
